As we gather this Sunday for the Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost, we will continue to reflect on the Gospel story of Jesus’ teaching of servanthood ministry to others. The Gospel tells of the encounter between brothers, James and John, and Jesus, as the brothers ask for special consideration in the next world. This “special request” creates some tension among the other disciples and has Jesus, once again, trying his best to teach the meaning of “greatness” as it is defined in God’s mission of grace to the world. We will reflect on Jesus’ words and how his teaching holds meaning for us in our contemporary context.
